In some parts of the world it is not uncommon for young women to marry older men. Everyone has their own opinions as to why a young girl would marry an older man, especially one that is much older than she is. Again some of these young men may be gold diggers, but most people seem to think it is because the older woman wants a toy boy. Whether like the older men they want to have a trophy on their arm to show off to their friends or whether they prefer younger men for their sex drive, these couples often find their families and friends cant cope with their relationship and often turn against them. She wouldnt have had so many sexual partners that she would be able to assess him like that. Would she? Well I hope my 16-year-old daughters havent!!! We all have different ideas as to what is acceptable to us. We dont choose who we fall in love with, it just happens. So how can we choose what age the person we fall in love with should be? What is acceptable to me might be totally unacceptable to my sister and most certainly would not be acceptable to my parents. However, before we pass comment on anyone else, we should take a close look at our family and friends around us. I know a young girl who is 17 who is courting a 26 year old, now when her parents found out they went ballistic. Well we all want what is best for our kids, but hang on dont go throwing those stones just yet. Her parents for example, what is the age difference there? Well its about 3 or 4 years. What about grandparents? 5 years. Great grandparents? 7 years. Now no one told any of those couples that they couldn’t see each other because of the age difference, they all married and were together all their lives. Of course if my 16 year old daughter came home and told me that she was courting a 50 year old man I would flip out, but at 16 they are classed as adults and there is little or nothing that you can do. If you lay down the law and tell them that they cannot see the older person, then all you will do is push them closer together. If you tell a teenager they arent allowed to do something then that is exactly what they are going to do. Perhaps if you leave it be and dont make a big thing out of it, it might just all fizzle out. To a 16 year old, an older man might seem like a good idea. After all hes experienced, he knows how to treat a girl and when you go out he doesnt expect you to hang around on street corners. But, these young girls will realise that the kick or thrill they get with this older man soon wears off. He wont be able to keep up with a young girl for long. He wont want to go clubbing and partying all night. As Ive said before there is no right or wrong answer to this question, but I think that this debate will go on for a long time. Does age matter? Surely the answer has to be that it should only matter to the couple concerned. If they are happy with the age gap then everyone else should respect their feelings and wishes and leave them to get on with it. As parents we can only be there to pick up the pieces. By Audrey Okaneko To make an alphabet scrapbook for a child, I suggest using an 8×8 album. My sister takes hundreds and hundreds of pictures of her daughter. I remember thinking there she is with a banana, and there she is with an apple, thus the idea of an alphabet scrapbook developed. I like stencils. I created all 26 letters using a stencil. I then mounted the letters on the opposite corners. For example, A was in the upper left corner, while B was in the upper right corner of the adjoining page. Ive also seen alphabet scrapbooks with the letter centered on the top of each page. The option to put the letter in the bottom corners or centered on the bottom is also there. Or create your album mixing all of the above with the letters in various places throughout the album. Try putting the letter in the center of the page and then building your photos around the letter. Your A page can either be the child holding an apple, or it can be mom and dad inside an airplane. Maybe you have a pet named Ben. That could be the focus of your B page. I think it is so much fun to go through photos and specifically look for those photos that belong to a certain letter. Its also fun to create your ABC scrapbook, taking photos during the year, making sure to get one photo of your child for each letter. Children learn to recognize and read letters usually after age 3. This gives you 3 years to take photos. When the alphabet book is a book of pictures of the child, the child will look at the book over and over again, reading the letters, and reading the words. Children like to read about themselves and learn about themselves. You can also create a book for nieces, nephews or a good friend, if you are with them often enough to take photos of the child with each letter of the alphabet. The main strategy that has been adopted by the credit card companies such as Egg, Barclaycard, MBNA, Alliance & Leicester, Tesco and Mint, to prevent rate tarts, is the introduction of about a 2% transfer fee on all balances between cards. Card holders will then usually benefit from an introductory period of up to 9 months at a rate of 0% interest being charged over the deal period. Although the moves are designed to stop the actions of rate tarts eating into lenders profits, many experts still say that while there are more obstacles, and the benefits of switching have been reduced compared to past levels, borrowers can still save money by judiciously changing between lenders. Savings Director for Chase de Vere, Sue Hannums, believes that, “Even with these new charges, those with outstanding debts on their credit card should still look to move to a cheaper deal. If they can switch from one introductory offer to the next they should make substantial savings over the long term.” Financial Director Stuart Glendenning states that consumers are saving about 1 billion a year by taking advantage of interest-free periods; however he suspects that, Most banks are now working on a way to discourage rate tarts. This will probably come in the form of more widespread and more expensive transfer fees, particularly for longer interest free offers.” Martin Lewis, of moneysavingexpert.com, advises: “You must be vigilant and be prepared to transfer again and again if you want to make the savings. After a six-month interest free period, you only have to pay interest charges at the standard rate for two months to lose all of the benefits. And even if you forget to move from that card just one day after the free period expires, you will pay an entire month’s worth of interest for that simple mistake.” For mortgage borrowers, the introduction of penalty fees does seem particularly harsh, as David Hollingworth of mortgage brokers L&C points out, “Most people’s gripe here is not that there is a fee, but more about the increasing of that fee over the term of the mortgage, so when you are taking a deal out it can be one figure, when you come to actually switch, then you are looking at a very different figure.” But the lenders view it as more of an effort to recover fees directly from the customers who are causing them additional costs, rather than including these costs into their overall interest rates thereby making everyone pay.
